Regionalism and Regional Identity in Central Europe

April 7th, 2022

Place: the main building of the Pedagogical University of Kraków, room…

Address: ul. Podchorążych 2, Kraków, Poland

Aim of the conference is to propose a debate on the issue of regionalism: one of concepts that seem to be crucial to understand a phenomenon of contemporary Central Europe. The idea of regionalism can be understood both as an emotional process, expressed in developing local identity or interest in one’s “little homeland”, and as a phenomenon of institutionalization connected with activity of various associations, cultural societies and environmental initiatives. Actions taken by local authorities and local governments seem to be also important.

A need to analyze these processes has become a starting point to propose an in-depth and multi-faceted discussion on certain issues, such as regional education, history and protection of the region’s cultural heritage, as well as the role of tourism in preserving a heritage of ancestors. We would like to examine Central European regions through the prism of their cultural, social and educational policies, as well as focus on actions taken to preserve and cultivate local distinctiveness.
